We had a school wide celebration on Friday! Mrs. Garcia's class came down to help our class make paper airplanes. Then, the whole school went outside and tried flying them through different obstacles such as hula hoops. It was fun for all the students. Here is the link that we used to teach us how to make the paper airplanes. There are videos and templates to printout. Paper Airplanes
Literacy:

We are working on writing our own fiction stories. While writing, we are also using what we have learned during reading. That means thinking about character, how to get characters in and out of trouble, and the lessons that character learn. I am amazed by the writing of the class! I can't wait to send home their stories!

The students have loved library this year! Mr Gile always makes books come to life with the wonderful voices he uses and he helps students find books for any interest! Thanks Mr. Gile for making books come alive! This past week was our last time to take out books for the year. Please look around at home and send back and library books you find.
On Tuesday, a librarian from the Winooski Memorial Library will come visit us to get the kids excited about visiting and using the library this summer.
You would not believe the thoughtful discussion our class has during read aloud time. One day, I had to get our reading coach, Jen Lapointe, so she could come down and here the sophisticated thoughts the students were sharing!
We referred to her books during reading and writing time. Her books helped us during writing time as we worked on our own narrative fiction pieces. We analyzed the Tacky books and realized that Helen Lester started the book with strong character development, included patterns, dialogue, and got her characters in and out of trouble. We played around with those same ideas in our own stories.

One group of students in our room read a series of books by Dori Hillestad Butler and loved them so much, that they wrote to the author. I'll let you know if we hear back from her!
The fire alarm went off in school this past week. Our class (and all of JFK) did fantastic! They were silent walking out and waiting for the all clear to go back in. Sara Raabe was so impressed she gave everyone popsicles!
We took a unit test on Friday. I'm so impressed with the class did on it! These were hard concepts but through the whole unit, the class pushed their thinking, took risks, made conjectures, asked genuine questions, and increased their flexibility with numbers.
Literacy:
We have started our new reading unit. This unit is all about story elements. We are working more with comprehension and deepening our understanding about how stories work. We will be looking at different book series and looking at themes in books.

We also started a new writing unit. We are learning how to write our own stories! We are having fun created our own characters and having them go on adventures!

Math:
Wow! we had super math thinking this week, including some amazing conjectures as we developing our understanding of part, part, whole in addition and subtraction. More on this next week!Unknownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13903461845905975103noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7656195311799867039.post-89732836018801835862018-04-20T09:29:00.000-04:002018-04-20T09:30:08.621-04:00Opinion Writing Videos<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt; white-space: pre;">Important Dates:
Our students did a great job working on all their opinion writing during our unit. Mrs. Mormile's fourth grade class came down to help our class make videos about one of their opinion pieces. The fourth graders and first graders did a great job using adobe spark video.

Here are links to all the videos. Enjoy!
On Monday, Mrs. Mormile's class is coming in to help our class create their own videos based on their favorite opinion piece that they wrote. I will find a way to showcase the work when we finish. The opinion pieces are fantastic! The emphasis this week has been on writing our hook and goodbye (introduction and conclusion).

At the end of last week, we did squeeze in a fun buddy read time with Miss Bushey's class! Our class did a great job reading with expression and talking about the books they read with the kindergartners. The first graders also were able to help the younger students with books they brought in to read. Mrs. Lapointe also came in to join in with the fun!
We are back to solving story problems (addition and subtraction) and learning new strategies.

This week we started exploring fact families. A fact family are three numbers that can be used to create 4 equations (2 addition and 2 subtraction). 2,3,5 can be made into:

2+3=5

3+2=5

5-2=3

5-3=2

The mathematicians have been discovering rules about fact families in small groups and in partnerships. Then, they are sharing their discoveries with the whole class.

It was great seeing so many students at the Fun Fair on Friday, March 23. Thanks to everyone who was able to come and support the PTO and our end of the year field trips!

We also filled our heart jar and had a celebration out on the big playground. My favorite part of the celebration was watching Jenny coach kids as they learned to climb the rock wall section of the playground. Good coaching Jenny!

We read The Day the Crayons Quit last week and then wrote letters to convince the crayons to come back. We also read The Perfect Pet and students then wrote opinion pieces about which pet would be the best for them. Mohamed had us all convinced that the duck billed platypus might make a great pet!

The writing this class is producing is wonderful! We have learned how to write an introduction and conclusion in our opinion pieces. We are using transitional words and phrases such as: because, another reason is, also The students write and write and write!

During reading workshop, the students are starting to understand what type of books they like to read. From 10:45-11:30, you can find kids all over the room reading their books. Favorite books include atlases, books by Mo Willams, and a new favorite series some students are hooked on: King and Kayla by Dori Butler.
We fit a lot into this week!

Sara Raabe came in on Tuesday and talked to the first grade about school safety. The kids asked great questions.

Tracy Towers, the Tooth Tutor came to our classroom on Friday and taught us how to take good care of our teeth. We learned about visiting the dentist, brushing, and flossing. Each child has a bag that they brought home from Tracy.

We also had a whole school celebration! The entire school played bingo and it was a blast!

Literacy:
We started our opinion writing unit for writing. The students are learning how to state their opinion and back it up giving multiple reasons. In reading, the students are becoming the Boss of their Reading! This means they are monitoring their own reading to see if what they are reading makes sense. If it doesn't make sense, they are developing strategies to help figure out the hard words.

Math:
Wow! Lot's of great work in math this week! Students are deepening their understanding of tens and ones. We have also introduced greater than and less than signs. We also are working on telling time to the hour and half hour.
We ended up taking 15 minutes during the morning to just chat with friends! We had so much to tell each other.

Literacy:
We finished our nonfiction units in both writing and reading! To celebrate, we invited Mrs. Moulton's class in to hear our nonfiction teaching books that we wrote ourselves.

Then, we invited Miss Bushey's kindergarten class in and we read nonfiction books to them. Our class had prepared questions to ask the kindergartners throughout the reading to check for understanding.

Math:
The mathematicians continue to explore and build on their understanding of place value, using tens and ones. This is a huge leap in learning and requires flexibility in number sense and counting. This week, we introduced clocks and telling time to the hour and half hour.
Another great week with lots of learning and fun!

This week we went to the Vermont Food Bank Veggie Vango for the first time. The kids did great but a couple grabbed a little too much to carry. The kids were very appropriate most saying, "Thank you," when receiving the food. I plan on bringing the class to the food bank on the scheduled dates. For more information:
We celebrated the 100th Day of School on Monday. One of the activities we did was to read 100 books! Here is a picture of the list we made of the 100 books!

Valentine's Day was a fun but quick celebration! Since we had just an early release, we weren't able to do a lot of activities but we did enjoy opening all the Valentine's Day cards.
Literacy:
We are almost done with our unit about becoming experts at nonfiction. The students are examining nonfiction books and thinking about the decisions the author made when writing the book. This critical thinking is then applied to their own writing of nonfiction books. The class has written books ranging from gymnastics, sports, cats, Nepal, Somali words, and more!
IMPORTANT CLASS NEWS: Just a reminder to check all snacks for nut warnings. If there is not a label on the snack your child brings in, I can't let them eat it in the classroom. But, your child will be able to eat it in Mrs. Fox's room.
On Friday we went to the Flynn to see Pilobus: Shadowland. This show told a story through dance and shadows. (I've included a promotional video about the show at the bottom of this post.) We were lucky enough to win a free companion workshop. A teacher from the Flynn came to JFK on Tuesday and worked with each first grade class on how to create images using shadow. The kids were engaged and worked hard throughout the whole workshop.
We finished up our science unit on sound! The last few days of our unit focused on using what we learned about sound (vibrations, pitch, volume) and we created our own instruments! The children worked with their band mates to create a song. We then performed for second grade and many adults from JFK. Here are the performances!
Science:
We started our science unit all about sound this week! The kid are having fun exploring different sounds and discovering how sound is produced. Our big word this week was vibration, vibrating matter can make sound. We listened for sounds around the school, explored the sounds different materials make, and made kazoos!

The scientists worked so hard when we went to three different places throughout the school to find sounds. And even when it was time to stop and walk to a new place, they would continue writing while walking in a line!

Next week, we are going to continue to explore sound. The students will get to create their own instruments form a band, and create a song! I can't wait for next week!

The kids probably shared their kazoos when they got home on Friday. You should have heard the first grade hallway! All four classes using their homemade kazoos! Here is a video that shows how to make a kazoo at home. It's a little different from ours (I just got 4 inch by 4 inch squares of plastic wrap, wax paper, and aluminum foil). Enjoy!
January 29 - Library
February 14 - Early Release 12:15
February 26-March 6 - No School

I know I've said before how hard this class works. But you need to understand they LOVE to learn and work! They moan on Friday because we don't have school on Saturday and Sunday. They write, read, and work on math with smiles and great conversations that further their learning. I just love this class!

And I made a mistake about library. We won't have library on the 22nd, but starting on the 29th, we will be going every Monday.

Literacy:
Nonfiction and first graders just go together. Their curiosity and quest for new learning pushes me to buy more books and increase my knowledge also. Today (Friday), when I finished up reading with some students, I just enjoyed walking around the room and listening in on all the conversations the students were having about the books they were reading. Topics included: flags, sharks, whales, frogs, dinosaurs, tornadoes, food chains, and reptiles.

Math:
The students are working really hard to be accurate. We do a lot of whole group and partner discussion time. This allows students to share their thinking and new strategies they have discovered. We are now comparing lengths and next week will be ordering lengths.
Our read aloud focus and nonfiction writing has been on Martin Luther King, Jr and Ruby Bridges. Biographies and autobiographies about these two people who helped change the world have led to wonderful, thoughtful, compassionate discussions. Some of the books we have read so far:

Martin's Big Words, by Doreen Rappaport
Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, by Jean Marzollo
Ruby Bridges Goes to School: My True Story by Ruby Bridges

After reading from one of the above books, writers worked on their own books to teach others about Martin Luther King. We made sure to make time each day for the writers to read what they wrote.

Math:
Wow! The discovery and discussion about measurement is amazing! The mathematicians are making connections and generalizing measurement concepts while working with a partner to measure objects and now pictures of fish. The partner work allows for more discussion so students can formulate their thinking, share and compare ideas, and build generalizations.
January 15 - No School

It was so good to see all the students back after vacation. I know it was a short week, starting on Wednesday and then a snow day on Friday, but we got a ton of work done in those two days! This class works hard and loves new learning!

Also, we now are able to go to library every Monday. Hooray! Mr. Gile reads us great stories (and he also has the best read aloud voice!). Look for library books coming home each week. Make sure to send the books back each week so your child can take more books out.

We started learning how to read and write nonfiction. To kick off our unit, we compared fiction and nonfiction and then sorted the books in our bags. The students added lots of nonfiction books to their reading bags so we could use them as we develop new reading habits.

Math:

We also started a new math unit: measurement. Throughout the unit, students will be using nonstandard units of measure to compare lengths of various objects. As mathematicians, we analyzed pictures of students using measurement tools (clocks, scales, rulers, etc.) and shared our thinking about how and what they were measuring.

Hour of Code:
Last week, every classroom in JFK celebrated Hour of Code. During this time, students had the opportunity to work on introduction to coding concepts. They loved it and everyone did a great job! We used an app from Kodable for our Hour of Code. This is a free app you can download to an iPad.

The students sounded great! They worked really hard on the songs in music class and it showed in their performance. The students' mandalas were hanging in the hallway. The students made these in art class.

Literacy:
We are finishing up our literacy units next week. Our unit during reader's workshop has been learning all the good habits that readers use when starting a book, working with a partner, and solving hard words.

In writing, we have been working on our small moments, writing about a small event that happened to us. In our writing, we have learned to use dialogue, movement, and feeling words. I am so impressed with what the writers have done!

Math:
We are also coming to the close of our second math unit. This unit has built on all the concepts of our first unit. The mathematicians are becoming more flexible with numbers and how to break them apart and put them back together. They are also becoming more flexible in their thinking.

We also celebrated our time with the St. Mike's buddies. These college students came in every Friday during math to work with the students. We had a pizza party and enjoyed time together.
Important dates:
December 4: library
December 13: early release
December 14: Winter performance

Only a few days left in November! I can't believe it! It was so great to chat with everyone during parent/teacher conferences. Every child works so hard during the day! I loved sharing their work with you and celebrating each child's growth.

We continue to develop good reading habits. Students are learning to ask themselves questions as they read and ask questions to their reading partners.

I am so impressed with the students' writing! They love writing time and hate for it to end! We continue to develop our writing of small moments, I shared many of the students' writing during our conferences. The writers need to think of an idea, plan it, sketch it, write it, and then revise it. Revision has always been a tough part for first graders, but this group takes it so seriously! Students work together to ask questions of each others' writing. This prompts the writers to add more. They are using editing marks to add in words and phrases, plus they are using revision strips to add even more.

Our new unit builds on the concept we learned in unit 1. The mathematicians discovered that there is a pattern that can be used when finding combinations of a number: 1 +9 = 10, 2 + 8 = 10, 3 + 7 = 10, etc.
November 20-24 - no school

This past week was a quick one: no school on October 30 due to the storm, Halloween on Tuesday, and lots of fun work in reading, writing, and math!

For our Halloween celebration we made healthy spider treats. The PTO also provided popcorn. Yum!

I had the honor this weekend of presenting with 3 of our ELL teachers at the Northern New England Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages conference on Saturday. We had a big turn out for our presentation. We ran out of chairs, had people standing and sitting on the floor, and then more people came! We finally had to turn some people away because there just wasn't any more room. I am so lucky to be able to co-teach math with Sarah Forbes. Thanks for all you do Sarah!

Literacy:

We have started to learn how to read with a partner. Partner reading is an important part of our literacy time. Partner work on asking each other questions about the books and help each other to use learned strategies when they are stuck on a word. The students are doing a great job transitioning from our whole group mini-lesson to independent reading to partner reading.

During read aloud, I am reading books that focus on a small moment. This will help the students as they write about their own small moments. One book we used this week was Roller Coaster by Marla Frazee. It's a book I've just discovered and it's fantastic to teach about small moments.

Mrs. Lapointe came in at writing time and helped us revise our writing. The writers are doing a great job of going back, rereading their work, and adding more to help it make sense.

Math:

Our fact power is growing! The mathematicians love developing their math fact fluency during fact power time. Students are working through their levels and applying this new learning throughout math time!

We continue to work on combination problems. During our work, the students have discover the "turn around fact" rule. This rule means that 1 + 3 = 4 is the same as 3 + 1 = 4. Here is a video of a student explaining the discovery.
November 20 - no school parent/teacher conferences
November 20-24 - no school

We had our first whole school celebration last week! Each grade represented one of the HEART expectations. Then we had a whole school parade which ended in the cafeteria where we got to see a science and magic show!

And... we filled out jar again! I can't believe how many hearts this class earns! More info about our celebration next week.

We examined bones this week! I had sheep bones that the students got to examine. Then, we talked about our own bones. The students drew and labeled skeletons. Then they created skeletons out of Q-tips!

Literacy:
We are having fun with Halloween books. One of my favorite books is Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman. The class was able to connect the bigger theme of teamwork in this book to the book Swimmy by Leo Lionni.

We have such a class of writers! Our unit we are working on is writing about small moments. The writers think about a small moments (such as me dropping a basket of markers) and then stretch it out to write a whole book about it. We have such daring writers! They get right to work and they don't want to stop!

Math:

We have learned a new type of math story problem. These are called combination problems. In these problems, we are given the whole (the total) and need to figure out the parts (addends). An example is:
I had 9 things on my plate. Some are peas. Some are carrots. How many of each could I have? How many peas? How many carrots?

In these problems we find many equations that equal the sum. This picture shows one student's work.
We do morning meeting from 8:20-8:50. Hope to see you there!

We earned another class celebration this week! I can't believe how many hearts this class earns each day! They are rock stars with our heart expectations: Honest, Engaged, Appropriate, Responsible, and Timely. It was almost a tie when we voted on our celebration: Wild Kratts or extra indoor recess. Since the class has been working so hard and the vote was so close, we did both!
Liz taught us how to wash our hands correctly. Then, she put special "germs" on our hands. The students looked at their hands under a black light. then everyone had to wash their hands and recheck. We all did great using the hand washing technique that Liz showed us. Bye-bye germs. We don't want you here!
We read three great books this week:
The Recess Queen, by Alexis O'Neil
Alphabet Adventure, by Audrey Wood and Bruce Wood
Alphabet Mystery, by Audrey Wood and Bruce Wood

As readers, we are looking for how a character changes in the story. The students did a great job noticing how Jean, the Recess Queen, changed from the beginning to the end. Now, we are even looking for these changes in characters in our own independent reading.
To reinforce this concept, we played a Froggy on the Number Line Game that Miss Sarah created. We have worked hard on:

1) Understanding that numbers get bigger on the number when you add and you are going forward. Numbers get smaller on the number line when you subtract and you are going backwards.

2) Addition is part + part = whole
Subtraction is whole - part = part
Wow! This class works so hard! I am amazed by all the work they do and how hard they push their brains.

One day this week we earned 189 hearts! Another day we earned 188 hearts! Unfortunately, I had to stop counting the hearts because children are putting the hearts in their mouths. We have been talking about how when you put a heart in your mouth and then put it in the heart jar, the germs go on all the hearts. We are working hard at not spreading germs. Once that habit stops I will get back to counting hearts.
We finished the book One this week. Oh how I love this book. After reading the book, we watched a class act it out and then we acted it out too.We also have done quite a bit of writing in our writing journals about the book. Finally we ended the week by working on a project based on the story. I love this book. The kids did too.

We also discussed the different ways and places people like to read. We have been trying out places in the room to see what works best for each of us. We then made an anchor chart showing the different

places we all like to read.

We also have started Word Study. We learn spelling during this time of the day through the Fundations program. This program is highly interactive plus I am making most of the lessons on the smartboard. The kids love using technology in their learning.

Math:
We've continued our work of understanding ways to represent our thinking and connecting our representation to the equation. The number line is our new math tool that we are exploring. The number line is another way for mathematicians to represent their thinking. Exposing students to a variety of math tools helps students become more flexible with their mathematical thinking.

The class earned a ton of hearts this week! One day we earned 112! Wow!
In this book, Mr. Plumbean lives on a street where all the houses look the same. Then one day, his house ends up with a big orange splot. His neighbors expect Mr. Plumbean to fix his house so it looks like all the others Mr. Plumbean has other plans.

We loved this book. After reading the book, the class made their own houses. They painted their
houses and then used paper to decorate their houses to show their hopes and dreams. I have these hanging out in the hallway.

We also started one of my all time favorite books, One by Kathryn Otoshi. This book is about bullying, acceptance, and standing up for others. Love this book. We read half of it, and the students wrote predictions in their writing journals.

Everyone now has a bag of books! We have been talking about how to build your reading muscles. There are easy warm up books, just right books, and challenge books. The students have made thoughtful decisions about which books to put in their bags in order to build reading muscle. We also started a poster in the classroom on what independent reading expectations.
Now, we are analyzing problems to see if they are addition or subtraction. The mathematicians then write an equation, representation, and an answer with a label as they solve the problems.
